Pao San Koo impact drill n.1

What

In the impact training drill shown in this video, the pad man makes use of a pair of small mitts called Pao San Koo. The purposes of training with this kind of pads are many: in fact, they goes from the introduction of new techniques and strategies to the development of the muscle memory involved in the execution of advanced combinations of strikes, from the shortening of the reaction time in the execution of defense and counter blows to the development of superior cardiovascular capability.

How

In the sequence shown here, the boxer applies the Salab Fan Pla evasive strategy to counter a left jab.
Step 1: as the pad man feeds him a straight lead, the boxer evades to the outside and catches the attacking arm.
Step 2: the boxer completes the outside step and attacks the pad man’s elbow with his forearm.
Step 3: the boxer gets hold of the pad man’s neck and counterattacks with a double knee to the midsection
Step 4: the boxer switches to a double neck tie and follows up with two more knee strikes.

Impact Training on the Thai pads (Som Pao).

Pad work is unequalled as a mean to refine the combinations of strikes and to increase the explosiveness of each attack. Therefore, the use of this training tool should be included in every Nak Muay’s weekly training routines. By working on the pads on a regular basis, hitting with kicks, punches, elbows and knees, great speed, coordination, fluidity and balance can be developed and as a result, all blows will gain greater power. The goal is to have at one’s disposal an array of fighting tools capable of annihilating the opponent with the least possible number of blows, when the latter are properly directed against the enemy’s sensitive spots.
